With the right tools many people can install their own locks which can save a lot of money. Most locks come with detailed installation instructions. Some locks can be purchased already ‘keyed alike’ or a locksmith can key them alike for you.
Tools Needed
Below is a list of tools required for basic lock installation.
- Pencil and ruler
- Screwdriver set
- Hole saws (28-32mm and 45mm)
- Spade bits
- Drill bit
- Cordless drill
- Power drill
A Good Idea
If your lock is old or broken and needs replacing a good idea is to remove the old lock and take it to the hardware store or locksmiths shop. If you buy the same lock or same size lock, installation may only require a screwdriver as the holes are already made.
Be Careful When…
Installing sliding window locks can be risky when drilling into the frame. It is sometimes hard to tell where the glass is, so be careful and use a cordless drill so you have more control.
Modern doors are often made from MDF (medium density fibre board). The dust particles from this material are dangerous if inhaled. A dust mask or respirator should be used when using a hole saw or spade bit on any wooden door.
Sharp drill bits are required, especially when drilling aluminium. Blunt bits will need more force, which can lead to broken glass or injury.
