Security doors and windows grills can provide additional security for your home and allow you to leave windows and doors open for better ventilation.
Security Doors
The Australian Standards for security doors state that a door should provide a level of resistance to forced entry that would alert the occupant of a home if someone tried to break-in. Security doors are not generally as secure as a well-locked door.
Security doors are great for ventilation while maintaining a degree of security and giving you a barrier when you answer the door.
Hinged and sliding security doors are available with single or triple locks. The triple locks are more secure and cost a bit more. Most security doors are made of aluminium (some with steel re-enforcing) and some are made of steel. The aluminium doors, although not as strong as steel, look better. The clear view of stainless mesh is more attractive than the expanded aluminium mesh.
If your security door has standard flywire a snib guard should be fitted.
The snib guard stops intruders from being able to unlock the door from outside. It also means a security door is safe enough just locked with the snib, with no need for a key. Some triple locks need to be key locked to engage all three locks.
Window Grills
Fixed windows grills provide great security while allowing the window to be left open for fresh air. A good window grill installed correctly allows the window to be open day or night even if the home is unoccupied. A few strategically placed window grills can provide great cross ventilation for your home. A window grill that allows a window to be left fully or partly open in the bathroom helps prevent mould.
Some insurance companies will allow a security door to compensate for not having a deadlock but read your policy carefully. A fixed window grill means you do not need a window lock.
